Britain's most northerly golf club — an 18-hole links on the Skaw Taing headland of the island of Whalsay in Shetland, reached by ferry from Laxo or Vidlin and rated among the best-loved courses in the UK by visitors. In midsummer's 'simmer dim' you can play midnight golf.
Founded in 1976 by a group of local residents as a nine-hole course, extended to 18 holes within a year. Members did all the early work until a greenkeeper was hired in 1994; the course was refurbished in 1989, recognised by the Scottish Golf Union in 1990, and the clubhouse opened in 1996. Golf was first played on Whalsay by the Laird's family near Symbister House in the 1850s.
